A brutal shooting made Detective Will Danner a wealthy man. But it cost him his job, his partner Robert 'Bobby' Nielle, and his serenity. The one thing Will was born to be was a cop. When Sheriff Ray Stettler offered him a job in his department, Will took him up on it. The last thing he was expecting when he walked in that door the first day was to find the love of his life, Deputy Sheriff, Joseph Albright.
Joe’s fundamentalist parents had beaten being straight into him. They sent him to Military School because of a teen age kiss with the boy he had a crush on. He put being gay behind him except for a few hidden moments of what he considered weakness. The one time he was true to himself, disaster struck and he crawled back inside his closet.
Can Will’s love be enough for him to make a stand? Will's life may depend on it when an angry serial killer comes to call.
Standing Stone edition by Phil J Harrison Literature Fiction eBooks
There is so much in this book, I don't know where to start. There is the romance - poor Will, he so deserved to have someone in his life who accepted him as he was. He wanted Joe. Thought Joe was straight. Lol. There were a lot of times I wanted to slap Joe around the head but when they did come together, it was electrifying and yes, there is sex and it is brilliantly done, especially the scene in the barn. Then there was the serial killer - Christopher - just thinking about the name makes me shudder. He had some very weird ideas and...you need to read it for yourself but the chapters from his POV were chilling. He was not a nice man and he was never meant to be.
Then there were the secondary characters. Phil Harrison made them all come to life. There was Jim, who I felt sorry for and I was pleased when things worked out for him. Ray - I think we could all do with a Ray in our lives. But of course the one with the biggest impact was Mac and yes there were times when I was reading this when I wanted to kick that man where the sun doesn't shine. He is a menace, and yet he's not and honestly you will need to read the book and make that decision about him on your own. He made me angry, made me smile and there were a few tiny times when I felt sorry for him. Oh and I almost forgot - the llamas - they were in a league of their own.
This is one of those rare books in the M/M genre that is more than just a romance; more than just a mystery story. The author has managed to weave the two things beautifully and while the writing is "blunter" than some in this genre, the author managed to make me feel something about these characters. I wanted Will and Joe to get together; Christopher bothered me and Mac, well, I am still on the fence about him. For that reason this book has gone onto my re-read file.

Standing Stone edition by Phil J Harrison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I just finished this book and my overall feeling at the moment is "I'd like to punch the author." And I am not a violent person. I don't even know how to write this review because my feelings about this book are all over the map. Let me start by saying this important thing in case the rest of this review isn't read this book ends in a cliffhanger. (edit the author says it is not a cliffhanger. This has piqued my interest and now I cannot wait to read the next book. Oh, man!)
Something about the blurb for this book caught my attention. I was intrigued. I decided to interrupt my light and breezy Christmas romance reading for this book which I knew included a serial killer. Now part of me wishes I hadn't read this book.
Let's start with the positives
+Characterization! Oh man, this author is good at making the characters feel very real. The things they do and say are very detailed and it's the small details that make them real. Will and Joe, of course, would be highly developed. But the secondary characters are also strongly detailed. Ray (sheriff), Mac (Will's ex and an FBI agent), etc. Even characters who are barely in the book (Jim, Will's buddy) and Cain (not even ALIVE during the book) are given enough background and details that they really matter; the reader cares about them a lot. Will is one of the most appealing protagonists in recent memory. He's a survivor, he's not too proud to enjoy the 'fall out' from his tragedy, and it's obvious from the way everyone reacts to him (Jim, Ray, Mac, Henry, etc.) that he's a great person.
+Mystery/Drama the mystery of this serial killer is really good! Honestly, I could NOT take the tension even from the beginning, so I tried to scroll forward to the end to see who it was, how it got resolved, who lives, etc. I couldn't find it - it's harder to read ahead on a . Turns out I could have figured it out if I had read the LAST FLIPPING PARAGRAPH. Anyway, we get chilling backstory on the killer. We get a sense of how sadistic he is without gratuitous details. There's even the extra creep factor of him having a family. shudder
+Subplots are entertaining Ray has set this whole romance for Will and Joe into motion. It's adorable to watch HIM watch THEM. Mac is an incorrigible flirt that keeps the reader guessing. I hated him. I loved him. I was shocked by him. He's a complex dude.
Now for the negatives
-There were things that didn't feel resolved, such as where did the killer's family go? Why did he have 2 houses? He was surrounded by all these cops, how could they NOT have figured things out? Yeah, I can see now why they were unresolved issues. The baby that Joe's ex-gf had and that sort of thing will probably come into play in the next book.
-The writing is pretty good BUT a major negative is it's choppy as far as conveying a sense of time and transitions. As I thought, "Wow these guys sure fell in love fast!" I realized that more time had passed that I thought. This happened multiple times in the book. I'd think we were a day or 2 from a previous event and then the characters would reference "the weeks that passed" or even "it's been 3 months." And I was like, "WHAAAA???"
-Unclear plot events were semi-frequent, which caused me to back up and re-read. I'd be reading along and suddenly I'd get confused and wonder how I missed a detail, like, "HEY! Did x character and y character actually have a sexual relationship? HOW did I miss THAT?" Back up. Re-read. Never find it.
-This book has made me feel stupid! I should have KNOWN this was going to need a sequel. There were so many bread crumbs along the way (in hindsight I can see them) and so many things that the author will use in the next book Mac is now a PI and moving not far away, Mac and Joe share a common 'agency' in their past and we don't know what it is yet, we never see anything about how Tristan ends up, or Jim and Aidan, for that matter. And of course, even though Joe and Will have just been through total HELL, they can't be happy yet, as we can see from the very last paragraph of this book.
I stayed up reading this book until I couldn't keep my eyes open. I woke up early to finish the last 11%. When I finished it, I wanted to scream. I think I wouldn't have felt so irate if I'd had a clue that this was the beginning of a series or a book 1 of 2 books (or whatever it will be). Then I just felt sick for these two characters whom I THOUGHT had just gotten their HEA. I didn't know if I felt like this was a ONE STAR book because the author is now annoying as F, or a 4 star review for making me care this much. I still don't know.
EDIT I am editing my review for two main reasons 1) I am a sucker for great dialogue in a book. I like snarky/sassy/funny and I like sweet/romantic dialogue. This book has entertaining dialogue including when Ray 'talks' to his dead brother Cain. 2) The second reason is because I cannot stop thinking about these characters. I mean....I can't STOP. I will be waiting for the next book, no doubt about it.
Absolutely loved the story. It looks like the beginning of a series. Very intriguing ending. The only question is when is the next one coming out? Can't wait.)
Loved the book, cursed the ending. Please tell me there is another one on the way. Too many unanswered questions for this to be case . The guys need a happy ending, all three of them. Well worth the read.
First let me say this book has a great story line keeps you on your toes. I laughed and cried and am looking forward to a second book hint hint. But I have to say the editing wasn't very good a lot of mistakes that couldn't be overlooked but it didn't detour from the actual story.
I loved it Phil!!!! I loved all the elements that were put in. From when Will walked in the station looking at Joe bent over to getting them back on trac after the hiv scare because of THAT man. I loved the whole book! But I have to ask, when is the sequel? You have to have one because of Mac for one, and the guy that should've been burned but wasn't! We have to know Phil. Have to.
Ok I finished this book last night but I was so confused I held off on my review...first off the book very well written....the characters come alive in this book...there were so many unanswered questions in the book...with the serial killer...Mac and Joe with the agency...what happened with Jennifer and the baby...now I understand there will be future books but still I wanted somethings answered... I'm annoyed and can't wait for the next book...great job Phil!!! I can't stop thinking about these characters and what's up next for them...GREAT DEBUT
