Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger (10 October 1825 – 14 July 1904), better known as Paul Kruger and affectionately known as Uncle Paul (Afrikaans "Oom Paul") was State President of the South African Republic (Transvaal). He gained international renown as the face of Boer resistance against the British during the South African or Second Boer War (1899–1902).

When I ordered this book, I wasn't sure I would like it. However, Kruger's life is fascinating and reflects well the life and times of the region in Africa.His life is fascinating. It is a journey filled with incredible hardships and deprivations that are reported in a totally matter of fact manner. Paul was one very strong willed individual that, in retrospect, is amazing.
There are some quite dry sections- I am not strong on reading the minute details of politics- and to the political correct, some sections could cause offence as, like other men of that time, he believes strongly in the superiority of the whites, the primitive lives of the natives, but this displays the attitude of the times.
It is an interesting glimpse of a time long ago.

Poorly translated and e book conversion. The paper copy may be a better option. However a good review of the early SA history.
As told by Paul Kruger himself, his early life, the many native wars, the formation of the old South African Republic and the causes of the Boer War itself and its many tragic outcomes. The British wanted the gold fields and they got what they wanted.
Kruger as president of the republic is best qualified to tell the Boer side of things.

Good detail and history to know
While Paul Kruger's actual memoirs make for a riveting read, the formatting is a shocker. What is particularly irksome are the footnotes that occur in the centre of the following page, right in the middle of the text. So one is left to unravel what is footnote and what is text. I'd advise that this work be taken down and re-formatted.
The preparation of this book is dreadful. The book's content is an interesting read which is not facilitated by the poor conversion. There are footnotes plunked, willy-nilly in the midst of the text. Chapter titles are not necessarily at the top of individual pages. Text of the book will discontinue for a footnote with no warning and then pick-up again after the footnote with no warning. Some of these interruptions occur in the middle of a word so by the time I found where the story picks up again, I had to search backward to figure out what the chopped word was. I finally gave up after about 100 pages. I would have liked to finish the book, but it was too painful to read it in this format. I paid nothing for it, but noticed it now sells for $1.29. Free was too much for this awful edition.
Great insight into the like of a very stubborn,obstinate ultra conservative man who would not accept change but was happy to milk all the profits of gold mines with very little in return.
